Update Firmware on Advantech WISE Series PLC via Initial Mode

This is an article on how to update the firmware on an Advantech WISE-4050/Lan or WISE-4051 Wireless PLC by accessing it through Initial Mode.

Consider reading this article to help determine the best approach for your use case.

  1. To update your WISE Series PLC, start by downloading the most recent firmware file from the Advantech Website.

  2. After downloading the firmware file, make sure to turn off your PLC. Locate the three sets of dip switches on the back of the device. On the third set, set the first switch to the OFF position (down), as indicated.
  3. Using a Laptop or PC, connect to the device.
    • For WISE-4050/Lan PLCs:
      • Connect a network cable from the PLC to your computer.
      • Power on the PLC, and wait approximately 1 minute for the device to fully start up.
      • Open a web browser and navigate to "http://10.0.0.1/config". This should open up to a log-in page.
    • For WISE-4051 Wireless PLCs:
      • Power on the PLC, and wait approximately 1 minute for the device to fully start up.
      • Open your computer's WiFi settings and connect to the network broadcasted by the PLC. This should look something like "WISE-4051_xxxxxx", where xxxxxx is the last 6 digits of the device MAC address.
      • After successfully connecting to the network broadcasted by the PLC, open a web browser and enter "http://192.168.1.1/config" in the address bar. This will take you to the login page where you can proceed with the next steps.

  4. Using the navigation on the left-hand side, click on "Configuration" and then select the "Firmware" tab.

  5. In the "Firmware Upload" box, upload the firmware file that you downloaded in Step 1, and then click "Upload Firmware".

  6. A progress bar will appear whilst the firmware file is uploaded to the device. Then, the screen will display "Please wait for module restart". Please wait until the timer reaches 0, and then you should be redirected.

If you aren't redirected after the timer, this is usually because your computer has connected to another WiFi network. Reconnect to the PLC's network and then reload the page.

  7. Check that the current firmware version matches the firmware version that you uploaded. You can find this at the bottom of the "Information" page.

  8. If the firmware version has been updated successfully, power off the PLC and revert the dip switch that you changed in step 3 back into the ON position (up).

  9. Power the device back on and the firmware update is complete.
