# How to create a trigger outside of a Setup state?
## Stop an alert or form firing while the line is still in Setup, using either the end of the Setup state or a unit count as the starting point.
#### **What you'll build**
One of two triggers, depending on what you need:
- A trigger that fires the moment the Setup state ends.
- A trigger that fires once the line has produced a set number of units, which only happens after production has genuinely started.
#### **Which one to use**
Use the end of the Setup state when the check belongs to the changeover itself — a first-off quality check, or a sign-off that the line is ready.
Use the unit count when the check belongs to production and you want proof the line is actually running, not only out of Setup. This is the safer option on lines where Setup ends before anything is being made.
#### **Option 1 — Trigger at the end of the Setup state**
1. Go to the **Triggers** tab.
2. Select **Machine State** and click the **+** button.
3. Select **Setup**.
4. Toggle on **On End**.
5. Select the **Lines** the trigger applies to, and the **Services** that should deliver the message.
6. Click **Update**, then **Save** on the page.
#### **Option 2 — Trigger after a number of units In**
1. Go to the **Triggers** tab.
2. Select **Job** and click the **+** button.
3. Toggle on **Offset** and enter the number of units.
4. Select **In** as the unit.
5. Select the **Lines** the trigger applies to, and the **Services** that should deliver the message.
6. Click **Update**, then **Save** on the page.
The alert only fires once OFS starts counting, so anything that happens during Setup is passed over.

#### **Test it**
Run a changeover on the line and watch what happens.
- With Option 1, the alert should fire as the line leaves Setup, not while it is still in it.
- With Option 2, the alert should stay quiet through the whole changeover and fire only once the unit count is reached.
If nothing fires either way, check for a yellow **Unlicensed Lines** badge on the alert group, the alert or the trigger's Licence column, then confirm **Disable Alert** is off and the trigger has at least one line.
#### **Adapting it to your own line**
- Set the offset in Option 2 high enough that it cannot be reached by test running or by the tail of the previous job. A handful of units is rarely enough.
- Both options can carry a conditional expression as well, if the check should only apply to certain products.
