# How to add a default alert variable to my Flow form?
## An alert variable pulls information into a form field automatically — either from the console at the moment the form is raised (Alert Data), or from your Product List (Product Data) — so the operator sees it without typing it in. For example, showing the Product ID automatically.
#### **Step 1 — Create an Alert Group**
In **Alerts & Flow → Alerts**, click **+** to create an Alert Group if you don't already have one for this form.
#### **Step 2 — Create the alert**
Within the Alert Group, create a new **Alert** — this will be your form.
#### **Step 3 — Add a form field**
In the **Form** tab, add the field you want to use. An **info text** field is the simplest choice for displaying a variable read-only.
Default Value can't be set on a **multiselect** or **checkbox** field.
#### **Step 4 — Label the field**
In **Form Field Label**, enter the title as it should appear on the form — e.g. `Finished Good Number`.
#### **Step 5 — Set the Default Value**
In **Default Value**, click the variables icon and choose either:
- **Alert Data** — information from the console at the moment the form is triggered.
- **Product Data** — information stored in your Product List.

In this example, a Product Data variable named Product ID is selected.
#### **Step 6 — Preview the form**
Click the **play** button at any time to preview how the form will look with the variable filled in.
#### **Step 7 — Save**
Save your changes.
