# What happens to historical data when I change my reason code?
## Explains the two ways a reason code change can be handled, and what each one means for historical data.
What happens to historical data when you update a reason code depends on whether you keep the same reason code ID or change it.
#### **Update historical data to the new name**
Keep the same reason code ID. Once the name is changed, all historical and future data retains and references the new name.
#### **Retain historical data under the old name**
Change the reason code ID. From that date onward, the reason code references the new name — but all historical data keeps the old name.
