# How to trigger an alert on a specific shift or crew?
## Add a conditional expression to a trigger so the alert only fires when a particular crew or operator is logged in, rather than on every shift.
#### **Step 1 — Open the trigger**
In the alert, go to the **Triggers** tab and open the trigger you created. Double-click the trigger row to open it.
#### **Step 2 — Turn on the conditional expression**
Click the **Conditional Expression** tab and toggle **Enable Conditional Expression** to **ON**.
#### **Step 3 — Drag in Shift Data**
Drag **Shift Data** in from the right-hand side of the expression builder.
#### **Step 4 — Choose the field**
Click the **Shift Data** chip and select `crewName` from the drop-down.
#### **Step 5 — Add the equals operator**
Drag the **=** sign in from the **Math Operators** menu.
#### **Step 6 — Enter the crew name**
Click the `0` on the right-hand side of the expression and type the crew name in its place, for example `Day`. The finished expression reads:

shift["crewName"]=="Day"
```
#### **Step 7 — Save**
Click **Update**, then **Save** on the page. The dialog's own button stages the change; the page-level **Save** commits it.

#### **Test it**
Log a shift in with the crew named in the condition and confirm the alert fires. Log a shift in with a different crew and confirm it stays quiet. Analytics records which condition matched under **Trigger Match**, so you can confirm the rule did the work.
#### **Adapting it to your own shifts**
- To target an individual operator rather than a crew, select `userName` instead of `crewName` at Step 4.
- To cover more than one crew, use the **OR** operator: `shift["crewName"]=="Day" || shift["crewName"]=="Afternoon"`.
- To exclude a crew rather than target one, use **≠** instead of **=**.
